Crack geometry: finish separation versus structural movement
Compare a stable surface joint crack with movement that creates diagonal geometry, offset or repeated reopening.

Stable finish movement
A narrow crack follows a board joint or material transition and remains stable across repeated measurements.
Progressive movement evidence
Width change, offset, sticking openings or stair-step geometry can indicate movement beyond the finish layer.
Watch the conditions
Change over time matters more than one photograph.
Do not assume
Crack width alone cannot identify the cause without geometry, location and trend.
Look for
- Diagonal path from a door or window
- Surface offset across the crack
- Repeated reopening after repair
Keep competing explanations alive.
Photograph both endpoints with scale, record width at fixed points, and note offset, sticking doors, floor change and reopening after repair.
Finish or drywall joint movement
A surface joint opens with ordinary seasonal or finishing movement without deeper displacement.

- Diagonal growth with displacement
Foundation or framing movement
Differential movement changes geometry across finishes, openings or structural elements.
- Diagonal or stepped geometry
- Measurable offset
- Door, window or floor behavior changes
- Stable hairline joint with no related movement
Material shrinkage or local drying
Timber, plaster or filler changes dimension and creates a local non-progressive separation.
- Seasonal relation
- Repeats at similar material joints
- No progressive displacement
- Width increases independent of season

Is there measurable offset, widening, or nearby door and floor change?
If yes: Escalate structural movement for qualified assessment.
If no: Continue a fixed-point log before cosmetic repair.
Does the crack follow a known finish joint and remain stable across seasons?
If yes: Finish movement becomes more likely.
If no: Keep material and structural alternatives open.
