Basement water: surface runoff, soil pressure and plumbing
Compare three pathways that can create similar floor-level water: exterior runoff, saturated soil at a crack or joint, and an interior plumbing source.

Water directed away
Roof discharge, grade and perimeter drainage reduce water loading against the foundation.
Concentrated foundation loading
Short downspouts, negative grade or saturated soil can drive water through cracks and the wall-floor joint.
Watch the conditions
Storm intensity, duration and the first entry point separate the pathways.
Do not assume
Water at the floor does not automatically mean groundwater; it may have traveled down a wall or from a pipe.
Look for
- Entry at a crack versus a broad joint
- Wet soil near a downspout
- Water use when weather is dry

Mark the first wet point before water spreads and compare exterior discharge, storm duration, soil saturation and dry-weather water use.
Surface runoff concentrated at the foundation
Short downspouts, blocked drainage or negative grade load one wall with roof and surface water.

Saturated soil entering at a crack or wall-floor joint
Long-duration rain raises moisture pressure and water enters at a foundation discontinuity.

- Immediate link to a fixture or pipe
Interior plumbing or drain source
A service leak travels down a wall or across the floor and resembles groundwater entry.
- Repeats with water use
- Occurs without rain
- Begins below a service route
- Only follows long storms and exterior ponding

Can water use reproduce the symptom when the weather is dry?
If yes: Prioritize plumbing and drain routes.
If no: Continue with exterior runoff and soil-pressure mapping.
Is the first wet point a crack, the wall-floor joint, or the face of the wall?
If yes: Use that geometry to separate concentrated entry from broad surface wetting.
If no: Improve observation timing before the water spreads.
