Define the question before measuring
Drain traps block sewer gas with water; evaporation, siphoning, leaks or pressure changes can break that seal.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.
Safe observations to repeat
- Identify infrequently used drains
- Add water only where appropriate
- Record fan and drainage timing
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- Odor begins at an unused drain
- Adding water temporarily resolves it
- Gurgling or pressure symptoms occur
Weakens the pathway
- Odor is electrical or chemical
- No drain is nearby
- The smell persists after verified trap restoration
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.
Escalation boundary
Persistent sewer odor, sewage leakage or suspected vent failure requires plumbing assessment.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
