Define the question before measuring
Framing, metal and compressed insulation can create colder surface stripes or spots that collect condensation or dust.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.
Safe observations to repeat
- Compare temperatures at framing and cavity centers
- Photograph under stable indoor-outdoor conditions
- Check for matching construction geometry
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- Pattern follows studs, corners or metal fasteners
- Thermal images repeat under similar conditions
- Dust or moisture forms at colder lines
Weakens the pathway
- The pattern changes with rain only
- No temperature contrast exists
- The mark is random and unrelated to framing
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.

Thermal images should not be treated as moisture proof without corroborating evidence.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
