Define the question before measuring
Closed doors and uneven duct paths can pressurize some rooms and depressurize others.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.
Safe observations to repeat
- Compare door open and closed
- Use tissue or a safe airflow indicator at the door gap
- Record supply and return grille conditions
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- Door position changes airflow or noise
- Symptoms follow HVAC cycles
- One room differs consistently from adjacent rooms
Weakens the pathway
- The system is off when symptoms occur
- The same pattern exists outdoors
- A direct moisture source explains the mark
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.
Escalation boundary
Do not modify ductwork, fire doors or transfer openings without considering fire, acoustic and ventilation requirements.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
