Do not start with the cosmetic finish
Moisture at a supply register can form when cold air cools nearby metal or drywall below dew point, or when humid attic or crawlspace air reaches the boot. Duct leakage and insulation gaps matter.

Ask which layer failed, what trigger activates it, how far the pathway may extend and what evidence will show that the source—not only the visible mark—was addressed.
