This protocol improves observation quality; it does not diagnose a hidden condition or authorize repair work. Record edges, materials, direction, active sources, drying behavior and unaffected controls before assigning a cause. Use a stable sequence so later comparisons remain meaningful.

Prepare the observation

Define the exact location, time window, trigger and nearby control area. Record weather, occupancy, equipment state and recent work before changing anything. Keep the original scene when safe and use only accessible, non-destructive observation points.

Run the protocol

  • Capture an overview and a fixed reference point.
  • Record the same variables in the same order.
  • Use one reversible change at a time.
  • Write down where the symptom is absent as well as present.

Repeat under comparable conditions. A single photograph, smell, sound or reading may be useful evidence, but it cannot prove the concealed source by itself.

Grade the evidence

Label the result as low confidence, useful signal, repeat under controlled conditions or strong enough for professional review. State instrument and access limits. Keep at least two plausible mechanisms visible until repeatable evidence separates them.

Stop boundary and handoff

Stop ordinary observation when there is electrical or combustion danger, sewage, unstable materials, unsafe access, rapidly spreading water, suspected hazardous material or acute occupant symptoms. A useful handoff includes the chronology, observation points, control area, original files, conditions, actions already taken and the unresolved question.
