Define the question before measuring
Insulation, timber, masonry and finishes can store water and release it later, creating symptoms hours or days after the original trigger.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.

- Repeat photographs from one position
- Track readings through the full lag window
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- The delay is repeatable
- The symptom grows after the trigger ends
- Absorbent layers lie along the pathway
Weakens the pathway
- Immediate fixture use always reproduces the mark
- No storage material is present
- Comparable events produce no response
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.
Escalation boundary
A short dry interval is not proof of resolution when the original symptom had a long lag.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
