Do not start with the cosmetic finish
A single wet patch can result from a roof path, duct condensation, plumbing, animal entry or stored water dripping from above. The insulation marks the endpoint, not necessarily the source.
Define the repair question
Ask which layer failed, what trigger activates it, how far the pathway may extend and what evidence will show that the source—not only the visible mark—was addressed.
Preserve a baseline
- Photograph before moving material
- Trace visible framing upslope
- Record trigger timing and compare adjacent dry insulation
- Keep one dated overview photo and one close view from the same position.
- Record the trigger state before work begins.
