Define the question before measuring
Water usually moves downward, but framing, membranes and fasteners can redirect it before it becomes visible.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.
Safe observations to repeat
- Draw a simple section from source candidates to the mark
- Record delay from trigger to symptom
- Inspect only safely accessible upstream surfaces
Compare supporting and weakening evidence

- The visible exit is below or beside an interface

Weakens the pathway
- The symptom occurs above all plausible sources
- No connected cavity or layer exists
- The mark follows heat rather than water events
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.

Avoid cutting multiple exploratory holes without a pathway plan and evidence-preservation method.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
