Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.

- Record which fans are operating
- Observe door and draft changes without altering appliance safety controls
- Use a professional pressure test where combustion is involved
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- Odor or draft begins when a fan starts
- A door becomes harder to open
- Nearby combustion equipment is present
Weakens the pathway
- The symptom occurs with all fans off
- Opening an interior door has no effect
- The source is a direct liquid leak
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.
Escalation boundary
Stop testing and seek qualified help if combustion odor, soot, alarms, dizziness or carbon-monoxide concern is present.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
