Define the question before measuring
Porous masonry, timber and finishes can pull water sideways or upward, so the visible edge may not identify where water entered.
Capture a useful baseline
Record the exact location, date, current weather or equipment state, recent activities and the first visible, audible, sensory or measurable change. Keep one unaffected reference point.
Safe observations to repeat
- Map the wet-to-dry gradient
- Compare absorbent and non-absorbent adjacent materials
- Record drying after the reservoir is removed
Compare supporting and weakening evidence
Supports the pathway
- A tide-like edge or salt line
- Moisture decreases with distance from a reservoir
- Absorbent materials are connected continuously
Weakens the pathway
- A single overhead event explains the pattern better
- The material is isolated by a continuous break
- The symptom appears only with indoor humidity
Interpret the result conservatively
Look for a repeatable relationship between trigger, location, timing and change. Treat exceptions as useful evidence rather than forcing every event into one explanation.
Escalation boundary
Do not install an impermeable finish over a capillary path before drainage and drying are evaluated.
Close the loop
If work is performed, repeat the same observation under a comparable trigger and through the original lag window. Record both recurrence and non-recurrence events.
